The International Conference on Fast Reactors and Related Fuel Cycles (FR17) has started in Yekaterinburg on June 26, 2017.

The conference is held by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) together with the Government of the Russian Federation and supported by ROSATOM. The event operator is the communication company Atomexpo LLC. The conference is attended by about 700 experts from more than 30 countries. It will wind up on June 29. The conference goal is information exchange on international and national fast reactor programs and new developments in this area. The first forum of this kind was held in 2009 in Kyoto (Japan) and the second one was in Paris in 2013. The third conference resides in Yekaterinburg.

The FR17 topic is “Next Generation Nuclear Systems for Sustainable Development. The conference is chaired by Vyacheslav Pershukov, Deputy Director General and Head of Innovations Management of ROSATOM. The FR17 conference in Yekaterinburg is expected to be largest in the history of fast neutron reactors: more than 500 presentations from 30 countries have been stated. It includes the opening plenary, key-speaker plenary, technical session, poster sessions, panel discussion and closing plenary. The main topics include national and multinational strategies and programs, reactor concepts, operation and decommissioning, safety and licensing, fuel, fuel cycle options, structural materials, industrial applications etc.

On June 27, the conference will frame the seminar “International Scientific and Technical Cooperation as the Basis for Nuclear Power Development” which is organized by ROSATOM and dedicated to the International Center of Research (ICR) based on multi-purpose research reactor MBIR which is being built in Dimitrovgrad-based NIIAR, Ulyanovsk Region. The seminar will also review the international experience in nuclear research for Generation IV technologies.

The FR17 also includes an exhibition where leading companies of ROSATOM will present their technologies and competences; foreign vendors and utilities will also be present. Rosenergoatom is the co-organizer of some events.

It is not on purpose that Yekaterinburg in Sverdlovsk Region has been selected as the forum’s venue. This region hosts the world’s only nuclear power plant with fast neutron reactors yielding commercial power (BN-600 and BN-800): Beloyarsk NPP. The conference participants will be given an opportunity to visit this plant.
